Here's a little information about me. I offer a range of editorial training courses in copy-editing, proofreading and editorial project management, for beginners as well as the more experienced who wish to further their skills. This training is also available in my books 'Proofreading Practice' and 'Copy-editing: A Guide for Proofreaders'.
Courses can be tailored to focus on a company's specific requirements, particularly in the case of business clients.
One-to-one tutoring is also available. In all cases, the emphasis is on enjoyable learning!
Since 1986 I have worked in publishing as a proofreader, copy-editor, project manager and tutor/mentor, for a variety of clients in both academic (Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences) and trade publishing, as well as directly with authors on developing their work.
My teaching commitments cover both regular, scheduled courses for the Publishing Training Centre as well as in-house courses arranged on demand: clients include Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Pearson Education, HarperCollins, Publishing Scotland, the Scottish Qualifications Authority and Bloomsbury Publishing, as well as businesses such as Standard Life, the Mental Welfare Commission of Scotland, Healthcare Improvement Scotland, Norgine Pharmaceuticals and Baillie Gifford.
I am co-author with Gillian Clarke of the Publishing Training Centre’s distance learning course ‘Basic Proofreading’, as well as being a tutor on both that course and the PTC's online ‘Grammar at Work’.
I am a founder member of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders and a mentor in proofreading and copy-editing on the SfEP’s mentoring scheme.
An interesting aspect of my project management work (for Blackwell Publishers) was being commissioned to create and set copy-editing and project management tests, then to mark them and give feedback on the applicants and mentor them through their first jobs.
